Who Can Vote?

Anyone on the parliamentary electoral roll can vote in the local body elections. To be on the electoral roll you must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident 18 years of age or over. To get on the roll you fill out a form, available from Post Offices, the City Council Civic office and all Service Centres. Many people mistakenly believe that you have to be a ratepayer to vote in the local body elections but this is not true. It is true however that ratepayers who own property in a different local body area to where they live can apply to go on the Ratepayer roll for that area and have an additional vote for that local authority where their property is located.

The preliminary Electoral Roll is open for inspection from Friday 27 July to Friday 24 August 2007.

All resident electors and non-resident ratepayer electors whose names appear on these Electoral Rolls when they close are eligible to vote at the elections.

Resident Roll: All parliamentary electors are automatically enrolled on the local authority Resident Electoral Roll at the place where they live. A confirmation card will be issued about mid July 2007. Any alterations to the Resident Roll, such as change of street or postal address details can be made by either:
  • completing the form available at any Post Shop
  • telephoning 0800 ENROLNOW (= 0800 367 656)
  • visiting the Electoral Enrolment Centre website on www.elections.org.nz

Ratepayer Roll: If you pay rates on a property in a different area from where you live, you may be eligible to be enrolled on the non-resident Ratepayer Roll, whether or not you are already a registered voter where you live. A firm, company, corporation or society paying rates on a property, may also nominate one of its members or officers as a ratepayer elector (providing the nominated person lives outside of the area). Any alterations to this Roll should be made at the relevant constituency's local authority office. Ratepayer enrolment forms and change of address forms are also available from these places. Final Date to Join or Amend the Electoral Roll
24 August 2007 is the main cut off date, and on 17 September 2007 the Electoral Officer for that Council certifies a Final Electoral Roll.
