Press Release Milne calls for action on Gilberthorpe
School speed zones
20 June 2007
Riccarton Wigram City Council Candidate, Tony Milne, is supporting
the principal of Gilberthorpe School's call for action on Council
adopting a lower speed zone on Buchanans Road.
As new developments come on line the population and traffic in
the area is quickly increasing. At present the open road speed
limit ends just before drivers on Buchanans Road reach the school
and a lower speed zone is needed to improve safety for young people
in the area.
"Big trucks should not be allowed to do 90kph only 100 metres
from the school gate. They should slow down long before they get
to the school", Tony Milne said.
"Council's have rules to operate within but there must be
some flexibility so that we dont lose sight of what is common
sense. Having read the rules in details it is clear to me that
there are ways to achieve a change to the speed zones if the Council
doesn't wish to bring the process forward", Tony Milne said.
Tony Milne has written to the City Council who has indicated
a review is not due until next year.
"The developers and Gilberthorpe School are supportive of
changing the speed zone so let's stop the bureaucratic nonsense
and get the review underway and new speed zone introduced now",
Tony Milne said.
Tony Milne has already written to the acting Principal Rebecca
Speden to offer his support for what she is trying to achieve,
and will continue to work with her to cut through the bureaucracy
and get a positive result for the children of Gilberthorpe School.
If the Council doesn't agree to bring the review forward Tony
Milne has discussed with the principal of Gilberthorpe School
the option of writing directly to the Director of Land Transport
New Zealand to request the need speed zone (as per Land Transport
Rules).
