Press Release Even mayoral candidates can't escape
the burglars
11 July 2007
Mayoral candidate Megan Woods is campaigning on public safety,
and knows first hand about feeling unsafe in her own home after
it was burgled on Monday.
Dr Woods returned to her Dominion Ave, Spreydon, home on Monday
afternoon to find it had been broken into.
"They took the back door apart completely.
"They stole alcohol, some money, cameras and went through
the freezer and took some of the food," Dr Woods said.
Earlier this year, Dr Woods' car was destroyed after someone
set it alight. "It was over Easter, it was parked right outside
our house and someone torched it."
Dr Woods, who lists public safety as one of her campaign issues,
said she could now empathise with people who felt unsafe in their
own community.
"It's pretty gut gut-wrenching -to feel someone's been in
your house and your safety has been invaded."
She said some of her neighbours had also been burgled over the
last few months, which brought safety concerns closer to home.
"It's such a concern that people have been in your family
home, it's not a very nice feeling at all and it's not just the
safety of your property, but the safety of your family as well,"
she said.
Dr Woods said the break break-in -had also been "painful"
in terms of the practical side of it.
"We had to get a builder in at night time to fix the door,
and then there is all the hassle with insurance."
