Environment Canterbury

A message from Sir Kerry Burke, Chairman
With leadership from the strong 2021 team, the Regional Council has made real progress in the last three years:
  • Air pollution is down
  • Bus passengers are up
  • City and rural water resources are being protected.
But plenty remains to be done. I urge you to vote for our full team to keep the progress going.

Water
We’ve taken firm action to safeguard supplies and protect water quality:
  • more resources for water management
  • irrigators and major users required to meet costs
  • 600 irrigation consents under review
  • major restoration programme for lowland streams.
Other Key Policies
  • reduce general rates by $7.8m p.a. by charging major water users for water management costs
  • protect Christchurch’s green belt from urban sprawl
  • designate corridors for introduction of light rail
  • complete Waimakariri Regional Park to Waimakariri Gorge
  • investigate ‘Mountains to Sea’ bike trail from Arthur’s Pass to coast.
