People's Mayor Jim Anderton and People's Choice candidates stand together with a shared vision for Christchurch: To break down bureaucracy and make the council more open and accountable; reduce debt for future generations; create new jobs; revive the inner city and make Christchurch a safer, better place for people to live, work and play.
The team, made up of members from the Labour, Progressive and Green parties, as well as those standing as Independents who support policy objectives we all share, are backing Jim Anderton for Mayor of Christchurch, who in turn, endorses 'People's Choice' candidates for council and community board positions.
Jim Anderton says, "The right team is needed around the council table to guarantee the best outcome for Christchurch. The Mayor has only one vote, the same as any other councillor. It is vital that the newly elected councillors and community board members all share a positive vision on how to make Christchurch the best city in New Zealand. Recent council decisions have dismayed many rate payers. They feel the council is not acting in their best interests. I want to change the way the council is run in order that its actions benefit everyone living in Christchurch".
Councillor Chrissie Williams says "I am delighted to be endorsed by Jim Anderton and to have Jim endorsing The People's Choice team across the city. To ensure Council makes decisions that respond to community needs we must elect Jim as Mayor and change the mix around the Council and Community Board tables. Our team will listen to people and open meetings to the public. Our team will cut the capital programme to reduce the debt currently loaded onto future ratepayers. Our team will protect Christchurch's drinking water. Our candidates will be out and about in their wards over the next three months. Make sure you take the time to talk with them."
Darel Hall, Chair of 2021 People's Choice team added, "This is more than a campaign; it's a statement about a better future for our children and our city".
